Marketing Yourself When You Hate Selling: A Guide for Artists and Creatives
If the idea of "selling" makes your skin crawl, you’re not alone. Been there, felt that. Many artists and creatives feel awkward promoting themselves. It can feel like you’re bragging, being pushy, or just not “your style.” The good news? You don’t have to sell like a sleazy salesman. In fact, the most effective marketing often looks nothing like selling.
Here’s what I have been learning (sometimes the hard way), and start attracting clients in a way that feels good.
1. Shift from Selling to Sharing
Instead of focusing on convincing someone to buy from you, focus on sharing the story behind your work:
🌺 What inspired this piece?
🕶️ What transformation does it bring to a space or person?
✏️ How did your client feel after working with you?
This makes your audience feel connected to you and curious about how they can work with you.
“I sell murals by sharing behind-the-scenes content and real client reactions. People want to be part of the story.”
2. Show the Process
One of the most powerful things you can do is show how your art or service comes to life. This builds trust and transparency. Post things like:
✏️ Sketches and mockups. Let us see the process!
🎉 Time-lapses of your work. These are so fun.
🚧 Paint-covered hands and real-life work moments. We are real people and we need to show that.
When people see the journey, they value the result more.
3. Focus on Service, Not Self-Promotion
Marketing is a service. It’s about helping people find solutions. Instead of “selling a mural or art,” think of it as: 🔊 Helping a business tell its story visually, ⭐ creating a space where employees feel inspired, or 📷 turning a wall into a shareable customer experience.
This reframe makes it easier to talk about what you do because you're focused on helping, not hyping.
4. Build Trust With Personal Stories
People don’t just buy what you do, they buy why you do it. Share personal moments: the first time you painted something big, what you’ve learned from working with clients or why you’re passionate about art. These stories make your brand memorable and human. ⛔🤖
5. Let Testimonials Do the Talking
💬 If self-promotion feels hard, let your clients speak for you. Showcase testimonials, quotes, or reactions. Even a screenshot of a happy DM can go a long way.
6. Give Before You Ask
Offer value freely: educational posts, tips, free downloads, behind-the-scenes glimpses. This builds goodwill and positions you as a go-to expert. Eventually, your audience won’t need to be “sold.” 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Final Thoughts: Connection > Conversion
Marketing isn’t about shouting. It’s about connecting. You don’t need to be loud, you need to be clear, honest, and consistent.
If you’re a creative business owner struggling with this, you’re not alone, and you don’t have to do it the hard way.
