Firstimers: What I Got Right, and So, So Wrong, The First Time I Painted.
Let me take you back to my first mural. I was nervous. Underprepared. Totally in love with the thought of painting. And completely unaware of what was coming.
Here's what I got right:
I said yes, even though I was scared
I planned my sketch and palette ahead of time
I brought snacks (essential!)
Here's what I got wrong:
I ran out of paint because I miscalculated how much I needed it.
On the first day, I forgot to bring sunscreen and a water bottle on a warm summer day. A miss.
It took me 5 days to complete a small mural. I focused too much on small details that are not visible from a distance.
But I painted it anyway. I learned. I grew. I survived. And I knew I wanted more.
Looking back now, I wouldn't change a thing. That Bell Box Mural gave me the gift of experience, confidence, and all the future murals that came after. What I am getting at is that no one is a pro the first time they try something. Like everything in life, you have to work at it. Work slowly, work smartly, but work.
From those "mistakes," I learned a lot.
I keep that attitude for most things in my life: LEARN. Apply the lessons to your practice. Today, you would not see me without water, sunscreen, Band-Aids, Polysporin, Advil, gloves, pens, pencils, small snacks, a hat, and sunglasses.
