Five (5) Things you need before applying for a mural

The 2022 mural season is approaching, and as I prepare for my applications, I decided to share some essential things you need before completing any application.

If you ask yourself how to start mural art, you are in the right place. This post is here to help guide you in the process of applying to an open call.

Let’s get started with some tips to get you started on Mural Art.

Things you need before applying to a mural call

  1. Prepare your portfolio (previous work)
Take good pictures of your previous work. If you do not have mural work, make sure you show painting work to demonstrate that you can take on a mural.

  2. Prepare your Artist Statement and your bio.
(Yes, they are different). Have a 200 word one, a 500 word one and a 700 word one. I will be writing a post about the Dos and Don’ts on your bio and your artist statement. For now, know that it is essential to have them ready to copy-paste when needed. Please have that proofread by a professional, or get Grammarly.

  3. Prepare your website
If you do not have a website, make sure that your social media networks showcase your work and not your cat (we all want to see your cat, but we need to see your work.)

  4. Prepare your CV

It is different from your resume. A piece of advice, keep it short. one page is ideal, two max. While I am sure you want to show all the fantastic things you have done. Try to keep it art+mural related. I have seen several applicants send a resume of 4-5 pages (TOO LONG), stating entirely unrelated things.

  5. Keep a positive vibe.
Like everything, it is a numbers game. The more you apply, the more chances you get to get in. So do not be discouraged if your application is not successful. Remember that different calls will have different people as jurors, and more often than not, it is very subjective. So do not take it personally, and keep trying.
