Starting in Lettering Art

Starting on anything new can always be daunting. However, Lettering Art is a discipline that does not require you to invest a lot upfront. Whether you are just starting, or you have already begun, here is a shortlist of things that you need to start with:

  1. HB pencil. Standard pencil or mechanical pencil, your choice. I am an old-fashioned human and do not love mechanical pencils as much.

  2. Eraser. This is a personal preference, but for me, the classic Staedtler Mars Plastic Eraser is the ONE.

  3. Paper. I am a regular printing white paper and not so much a sketchbook person. I used to have sketchbooks but I find they limit my creativity. It also feels that with the rise of social media, I started putting too much pressure on “making it Insta worthy” and that is not the point of the sketchbook at all.

  4. Ruler. I have SO MANY rulers, plastic, metal, long, short, square, curved rulers, etc.

  5. Tracing paper. - I know, old-fashioned Andrea- Hear me out on this one: You need it! I know that we have Procreate, and Photoshop, Corel or Affinity, and we do not need so much paper anymore. However, there is nothing like practicing in real paper. My advice is to look at real pros like Martina Flor or Jessica Hische (their process involves tracing paper).

  6. Attitude. This one is a personal one. You need to want to get better, to trace and trace until it becomes familiar.
